I've wanted a GPS Auto Nav for a long time. It was hard for me to justify laying out alot of money for one though. Maps and computer trip planners have always worked.
I saw the RoadMate 1200 on sale new for $80 and decided to give it a try. It is a basic unit that doesn't have some of the (unnecessary) bells and whistles that some of the more expensive units have. It DOES have all the things that make a Auto Nav unit valuable though. Points of interest, restaurants, fuel, shopping, coffee, etc...
After buying it I got in the car, plugged it in and punched in my home address. I didn't need to read the directions. Very easy to operate. It took me turn by turn, right to my door step. I have a airplane runway and hangar on my 20 acres and the RoadMate even showed the runway and hangar on the screen when I got close to my house.
It is very simple to use. The screen is bright and clear. Touch buttons worked great. The guy complaining about the buttons not working is complaining about the Spell Assist. His unit is not malfunctioning. He just isn't using it correctly. When it is used right, it works well. There are a few bad reviews for this unit on C-Net and another review site that are severely out of date. The RoadMate has improved since then and they have it listed at $199. Nobody is selling it for over half that now. They need to re-evaluate their info.
Anyway, mine is working well so far. It is a good entry level GPS that will get you where you are going. I do notice that there is some info that needs to be updated on the software. I hear Magellan will do this for free. |
No frills but works like a charm

| I ordered the Magellan RM 1200 because it was the least expensive GPS I could find at the time. I use it for work, mostly in the rural setting, and, since I make house calls to customers in several surrounding towns, it has already been put through a test. It works great. I even tried to "fool" it by taking a shortcut here or there. It recalculates my route and has me back on track in seconds. It lacks text-to-speech, and that would be nice, but the turn-by-turn instructions are pretty accurate. I'd recommend this unit to anyone looking for a reliable, no-bells-and-whistles unit that will get them where they need to go. |
